Have you ever looked at something and paid no attention to it whatsoever? Or has something ever caught your eye and made you exclaim in pure astonishment at its uniqueness or amazingness? These “normal” things would always amaze me and I am in constant awe of all the things in the world. I sound like a weirdo, I know, but hear me out.

When we talk about “normal”, we can think of various concepts - from tangible and material objects that we can touch, feel, and hold on to, or to intangible and immaterial things that our eyes may be able to see, but only our hearts and minds can perceive, our noses can smell, our ears can hear, or our skin can feel. Regardless, “normal” may seem like something insignificant to you that you could encounter on a daily basis and say, “Oh, yeah, that’s pretty normal; you don’t really have to think about it”, but in reality, it is always more than meets the eye.

The thing with our everyday instances is that nothing is really just “normal”; it may happen to be that way “just because”, but have you ever thought about what really went behind the scenes? Have you ever appreciated the thousands of interactions that had to take place just for that one moment to happen?

Let’s put our home electricity for example. We’d think that by turning on the switch, the light bulb would be filled with electricity and that the room would be lightened up, right? What if I told you that there were billions of micro-interactions that we always took for granted. For example, the very moment you entered the room, an immeasurable amount of atoms prevented you from completely touching the floor. Wait, what? But I felt the floor with my feet! Well, what you “felt” was actually the repulsion of particles from each other. They prevented you from touching anything at all, so all you ever actually touched and felt was the repulsion of a gazillion particles! Anyways, there were also tons of gaseous particles that floated around your room, micro insects that swarmed your body, and the moment you turned on the switch, millions of electrons flowed from one place to another, and insulators prevent them from overflowing.

There are multitudes of other interactions that I omitted, but my point is that there is an immeasurable amount of interactions out there that we always fail to appreciate. Another example would be our Webcams. Did you know that what we physically see ourselves as on our screens when we turn our camera on, is actually the reverse of what the others see? Yes; The reflection that we all see in our mirrors is actually a reversed image of how we appear to the camera, and to the world around us. This is explained through physics, but I’ll leave that for you to study.

What we perceive as “normal” actually took millions of years to develop, and it all transpired to this moment where society has gotten used to it for years, thus we call it the ordinary. However, I believe that there are so many things in the world that we fail to appreciate the beauty of just because we don’t notice it, as they are covered by the veil of ordinariness, while our eyes are blinded by ignorance. Or maybe, you know, we simply missed that part since there were other things out there that caught our eyes. Nevertheless, if I were you, I’d sit back, take a deep breath, and look around me; The very fact that my desk still stands, my seat can be sat on, my laptop can access applications, my eyes and fingers can work together to type this, and my mind casually reading the words I type with that unknown voice at the back of my mind - I’d appreciate the life that’s been given to me, and never call it normal nor ordinary.

I’d call it special. As all the things that took place transpired into this very moment, I’d call anything special. Even the concept of “normal” can be seen as something special, depending on how you look at it.

With all that, it’d be best for us to look at things in a different light and pay attention to the things we still can, as there are so many things out there that are more than meets the eye. Who knows, the very thing you called normal the other day can change your life forever in a very special way.
